The Ever Presence of Trees
I do not know if I am alone in this, as I haven’t voiced it much. But often when I find myself fully present in nature, I am taken by the idea that every living thing has a life all its own. That as I carry along my daily human rituals, a grove of birches lives, in communion with one another, growing, shedding leaves each season, basking in the winter sun, lying in darkness as night falls, weathering storms. That all of nature lives in a secret presence unbeknownst to me, and yet here I am, part of it all.
On a rare occasion, I don’t finish a painting in one to three sittings, this painting happened to be one of those. It sat as a work in progress over the stretch of nearly the entire month of February as I sat in small sessions to lift out each tree and make space for detail.
