Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes! My studio is located in my home just outside of Two Harbors, MN where I live with my partner and our chocolate lab. As of now, studio visits are available by appointment. Appointments are for anyone who would like to take a look at paintings in person and tour the space where my art comes to life. If you’d like to set something up, please send me an email at katie@katiebrommewatercolor.com. I appreciate receiving requests at least a week in advance.

I also have an exciting opportunity coming up! On the third weekend in October, I am hosting my inaugural Open Home Studio Event and I would be delighted to have you attend! To learn more, click here!

  • Something is in the works... Teaching is something I have felt called to do for a while and currently, I am in the process of structuring out how to get that started. If you’d like to be notified when I have news about teaching, please sign up for my mailing list here!

  • I am only open seasonally for commissions. Usually during the winter months as the festival season leaves me very little space for extra projects. I plan on reopening for commission requests in November through February. I will send out an announcement via my newsletter when I am open for commissions again.

  • First off, let’s talk about how to even pronounce this funny word… Giclée is a french word, pronounced “ZHEE-klay.” Its native translation means “a spray or spurt of liquid.” The term "giclée" is used in the context of fine art printing because it describes the way the ink is applied, using a fine spray from an inkjet printer. The result being a vibrant duplicate of an original piece of art that looks as close to the original painting as possible.

  • When I use the term “fine art paper” I am referring to the quality and thickness of the paper on which my giclée prints are printed. I use only 100% cotton paper of archival quality (this means that it is acid free and won’t degrade or yellow over time). Fine art paper absorbs and retains ink so that the print stays vibrant for longer and its texture is very close to the way watercolor paper looks and feels.

  • I think this is my most frequently asked question. The truth is, I do not make every single one of my original paintings into prints. My first reason for this is often the size of the paper. My paintings typically range from 7x10” to 18x24” and often when a painting is on the smaller side and set at a lower price point, I don’t usually make it available as a print.

My second reason is, that I paint a lot. It is not sustainable for me to store high volumes of print inventory for a business of my size — I’m a one-woman show :)

I also prefer that the original painting sell before I make it into a print. However, I have made exceptions in the past when I have received numerous requests for prints of a particular piece, especially if it is in a higher price range.

  • I mat and frame all of my own original artwork. I use only acid-free, museum quality mat board and I cut all my own mats myself. I order my frames in bulk and also stain and varnish the frames to complement my paintings. I keep my mat and frames relatively neutral, using antique-white mat to match the natural tone of my watercolor paper. My frames are all made of 100% authentic wood in either a walnut-stain or a neutral, smokey tone. I also use barnwood frames when they are available.

I install all backing hardware myself. Each framed original piece includes picture wire held in place by d-rings and screws. I have found it’s the sturdiest hardware for picture hanging.

  • At the moment, I use stock picture frame glass. This is not UV resistant or anti-glare. However, if you are interested in a piece and would like to upgrade, that is absolutely possible but I do charge an additional fee based on what grade of UV protection and anti-glare you would prefer. There are three tiers of protective glass available for additional cost:

Conservation Clear Glass (Max protection from UV light, 8% anti-reflective) — $20+

    Anti-Reflective No Tint (70% UV Protective and anti-reflective) — $35+

Museum Glass (99% UV Protective and looks invisible <1% reflective) — $70+

All price estimates are for an 8x10” sheet. The price goes up with glass size. If you have any questions about purchasing a piece and upgrading the glass, please email me at katie@katiebrommewatercolor.com or contact me here.

  • Of course, the best place for you to shop for my art is going to be this website right here through my online shop or through direct purchase in my studio! During the months of June through October, I am typically traveling to different art fairs and festivals and these are also great places to find me and my art. You can visit the events section on my homepage for my event schedule.

I also work in collaboration with local stores and galleries who carry smaller selections of my prints and cards as well as some originals and framed prints. I so cherish my relationships with these stores and am always so thrilled to hear when you purchase a piece of my work through them. By doing this you are supporting both me and another small business! You can find my art at the following stores or galleries:

North & Shore Mercantile — Duluth, MN
The Meadows Gallery & Studios — Ely, MN
47 Degrees Art Gallery — Knife River, MN
    Duluth Market — Duluth, MN
    Dovetail Café — Duluth, MN
